Waaaay back in December two young cinematic adventurers, Agnès Salson and Mikael Arnal from Tour des cinémas, gave us their thoughts prior to attending This Way Up. How did they find it? Did it live up their expectations? Here they give they post-conference feedback:
We had high expectations for THIS WAY UP conference and we were not disappointed ! During two intensive days, the range of the topics discussed was very broad and the perfect complement to the UK leg of our European Tour of Cinemas. It gave us an overview of the state of cinema exhibition in the UK while also giving us the opportunity to make connections with professionals and students from everywhere in the country. All of this taking place in the HOME in Manchester which was a fantastic venue.
We particularly liked the way the discussions around the movie going experience were approached, focusing on the point of view of the audience, questioning their new habits and practices. It was also an opportunity to refine our own cinema project. We want to produce film and audiovisual contents made locally in our cinema and we were very inspired by the presentation from Anna Highs about the experimentations around A Field in England, the insights of director Carol Morley and the “Local Stories” discussion.
As a whole, THIS WAY UP was a refreshing food for the mind to reflect about our work, as cinema exhibitors being part of a global shift in cultural practices, from the way we make films to the way we show them, to how we write about film or how we connect with the audience.
We look forward to come back to UK next year for even more exciting discussions !
